The Carthage College men's soccer team (10-5-2, 3-1-1 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), tied for seventh place in the Oct. 18 National Soccer Coaches Association Central Region poll, defeated CCIW-opponent North Central College (Ill., 9-4-2, 1-2-2), 4-1, on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 22 at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, Wis.
Carthage took an early, 1-0 lead on a goal by
Mike Heika (So., Inverness, Ill./Palatine-Fremd) at 73:58. North Central (Ill.) tied the game, 1-1, on a goal by Jake Muszczynski at 67:38.
Taylor Pignataro (Fr., Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs) scored at 36:06, his third goal of the year and assisted by
Billy Hamilton, to put the Red Men up, 2-1. Two minutes later, Carthage took a 3-1 lead on a penalty-kick goal by
Zak Khoshbin (Sr., Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Lake Zurich). A free-kick goal by
Greg Pignataro (Sr., Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs), his fifth goal of the year, at 57:03 upped the Red Men's lead to 4-1.
Carthage out-shot North Central (Ill.), 13-9.
Milan Tijanic (Jr., Glenview, Ill./Park Ridge-Maine East) worked the first 79 minutes in goal for the Red Men, with
Steve Kvasnicka (Jr., Westchester, Ill./St. Joseph) playing the final 11 minutes.
“North Central was ranked in the region just a couple weeks ago,” said Carthage coach
Steve Domin, “they're an experienced team, and just came off a convincing game against Wheaton. We didn't' take this game lightly. There were great goals by both teams in this game. We were fortunate that
Petar Tijanic and
Billy Hamilton showed up in the middle for us today, and were able to keeps our heads in the game. We have a ton of respect for the teams and coaches in our league, and North Central is one of those teams, but this one could of turned into a bit of a laugher towards the end. This was a quality win versus a quality opponent at a key moment in the season.” Carthage concludes its home schedule on Wednesday, Oct. 26 by playing host to CCIW-opponent and No. 14 North Park University in a 7:30 p.m. game, also at Art Keller Field.
