“Conference matches, particularly season-opening conference matches against quality opponents are always monsters,” said Carthage College men's soccer coach
Steve Domin. The Carthage men's soccer team (6-4-1, 1-0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) opened its CCIW-schedule on Saturday, Oct. 1 by edging Augustana College (Ill., 8-3-0, 0-1-0 CCIW), 1-0, at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, Wis.
The Vikings were tied for sixth place in the Sept. 27 National Soccer Coaches Association of America Central Region poll. Following a scoreless first period, Carthage broke the tie when
Michael Dombrowski (Fr., Johnsburg, Ill.) scored his sixth goal of the year, assisted by
Mike Heika, at 71:27. The Red Men out-shot the Vikings by a 16-5 margin. Carthage plays host to the University of Chicago (5-2-2) on Tuesday, Oct. 4 in a 7 p.m. game at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, Wis.
“I have a tremendous amount of respect for the Augustana coach and their players,” said Domin, “and it was apparent why they are ranked so high in the region. We were not as precise up front as we have been in recent games, but being forward regularly, we had that feeling that was only a matter of time. I've had over 20 brothers play for me at Carthage, and Augustana's Sean Fidlow, brother of current Carthage assistant coach Chris Fidlow, flew under our radar but has really blossomed into a good player for them. We have really been fortunate to play well this year against some of the top teams in the region and across the country. Once again, there is no relief in sight, with the Chicago, ranked fifth in the region and fresh off a convincing tie of North Park, coming up next. We are really banged at the moment, but several guys are picking up the pieces. I hope it doesn't catch up with us.”
