The Carthage College men's soccer team (2-3-1, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) was shut out by No. 1 Calvin College (5-0), 2-0, on Wednesday, Sept. 15 at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, Wis. Calvin scored both of its goals in the second period, the first on a penalty kick by Scott Hooker at 58:00. Brad Heethuis added the second goal at 85:00 on a deflection in front of the box.
"We were certainly were excited to play the number-one team in the country,” said Carthage coach
Steve Domin, “and we were not intimidated, especially after playing No. 16 Loras College and top-20 Wisconsin-Oshkosh earlier and getting positive results on the road. Tonight, we looked poised to make a run at another upset. We owned possession and the stat sheet for most of the first and a good portion of the second half. A penalty kick is always a tough thing to swallow in a game like that, and we had to push everyone forward in the last five minutes to try and equalize and wound surrendering a counter goal. We keep getting better against quality opponents, which is our end goal.”
On Friday-Sunday, Sept. 17-19, the Red Men play host to the Carthage “Battle on the Border,” also at Art Keller Field. On Saturday, Sept. 18, Carthage plays the University of Dubuque at 7 p.m. before entertaining Clarke University on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 5 p.m.
