The Carthage College men's soccer team (2-2-1, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) upset No. 16 Loras College (3-3-0), 2-1 in overtime, on Sunday, Sept. 12 at the Loras/Wisconsin-Platteville Tournament at Loras' Rock Bowl in Dubuque, Iowa. Carthage opened tournament play on Saturday, Sept. 11 with a 2-1 loss to Wisconsin-Platteville (2-1-1) in double-overtime.
In the win over Loras, Carthage took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a goal by Marko Markovic (Jr., Niles, Ill./Park Ridge-Maine East) at 10:56. The Duhawks tied the contest, 1-1, at 83:32 second period when Miguel Bonilla connected on a penalty kick. The Red Men won the game at 94:13 in overtime on an unassisted goal by Rafal Zalewski (Jr., Schiller Park, Ill./Franklin Park-East Leyden) on a breakaway following a turnover.
The Red Men play host to No. 1 Calvin College (4-0) on Wednesday, Sept. 15 in a 6 p.m. game at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, Wis. Last year's Calvin squad went 18-5-3 (10-3-1, 1st Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association) and advanced all the way to the title game of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship before losing to Messiah College, 2-0.
