The Carthage College women's volleyball team (4-4, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked 10th in the Sept. 7 American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, went 1-3 at the Friday-Saturday, Sept. 10-11 Washington University (Mo.) National Invitational Tournament at the Washington Field House in St. Louis, Mo.
Carthage split a pair of matches on Friday, Sept. 10, outlasting No. 9 Ohio Northern University (6-1), 3-2, before falling to defending-national-champion and No. 1 Washington (Mo., 8-0) by a 3-0 margin. The Lady Reds' winning scores over the Polar Bears were 25-27, 25-17, 21-25, 25-21 and 15-13, while the Bears' winning scores over the Lady Reds were 25-20, 25-17, 25-14. On Saturday, Sept. 11, Carthage lost to No. 18 St. Olaf College (5-2), 3-2, before losing in five sets to No. 7 Wittenberg University (6-0), 3-2. The Oles' winning set scores over the Lady Reds were 26-24, 23-25, 25-22, 12-25 and 15-13, while Wittenberg's winning scores over Carthage were 25-16, 21-25, 22-25, 26-24 and 15-10.
Lady Reds right-side player Izzy Shaindlin (So., Deerfield, Ill./Lincolnshire-Stevenson) was named to the all-tournament team. Carthage opens its CCIW-schedule on Tuesday, Sept. 14 by playing host to Augustana College (Ill., 2-8, 0-0 CCIW) in a 7 p.m. match at Tarble Arena in Kenosha, Wis. The Lady Reds enter Tuesday's contest with a CCIW-record 44-match regular-season winning streak.
