The Carthage College men's basketball team (2-2, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked fifth in the pre-season “D3hoops.com” poll, dropped its second-straight game on Wednesday, Nov. 24 with an 81-69 loss to No. 16 Whitworth University (3-0) at the California Lutheran University “Surf's Up Invitational” at the Punahou School in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Whitworth led most of the way. The Pirates opened an early eight-point lead, 17-9, at 11:48, which the Red Men erased. After falling behind again, 28-23, a 4:56, Carthage took a two-point lead at halftime, 35-33. The Red Men still led, 38-37, at 19:15 second period, before a pair of free throws by the Pirates' Felix Freidt gave Whitworth the lead, for good, 39-38, at 18:40. The game stayed closed for the next 14 minutes, with the Pirates finally pulling away in the final four minutes of the contest. Whitworth took an nine-point lead, 72-63, at 4:06 and went on to win by 12, 81-69.
The Pirates shot a sizzling 62 percent (29-47), including 67 percent (18-27) in the second half, while the Red Men shot 44 percent (22-50), including just 39 percent (10-26) in the first period. Whitworth enjoyed a whopping, 36-20 rebounding edge. Mike Taylor led the Pirates with a game-high 26 points on 10-of-15 field goals and five-of-six free throws, along with seven rebounds. David Riley had 20 points on eight-of-13 shooting.
Nick Kladis (Fr., Burr Ridge, Ill./Hinsdale-Central) came off the bench to lead the Red Men with 15 points on five-of-six field goals, all from three-point range.
Steve Djurickovic (Sr., Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Kenosha-Bradford) and
Max Cary (Jr., Geneva, Ill.) each had 13 points. Carthage takes on Pacific University (0-2) on Friday, Nov. 26 at Kalani High School, beginning at 3 p.m., HST.
