Millikin University Ends Carthage Volleyball's 49-Match CCIW Win-Streak

All things must pass. The Carthage College women's volleyball team (18-7, 5-1 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked seventh in the Oct. 19 American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, saw its CCIW-record, 49-match winning streak come to an end on Wednesday, Oct. 20 with a 3-2 loss to No. 32 Millikin University (23-5, 6-0 CCIW) in a key conference clash at Tarble Arena in Kenosha, Wis. 

Carthage's conference streak extended back to the 2003 season. The Big Blue's winning set scores over the Lady Reds were 28-26, 22-25, 23-25, 25-20 and 15-5. Millikin needs a win at home over Augustana College (Ill.) on Saturday to win its first conference title since 1999.
 
The Big Blue won the first set by a 28-26 margin. Millikin had a 16-12 lead in the second set before Carthage used a 7-2 run to take a 19-18 lead. The Lady Reds edged out to a 21-19 lead. The Big Blue closed to one, 22-21, before Carthage won by three points, 25-22. In the third set, the Lady Reds opened up a four-point lead, 17-13, but Millikin tied the set, 20-20. Carthage ran off four-straight points to take a 24-20 lead, but the Big Blue closed to within one, 24-23, before the Lady Reds won the set, 25-23. 

Carthage jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the fourth set before Millikin went on a 10-3 run to tie the set, 13-13. The Big Blue took an 20-15 lead, which they extended to 23-16. Carthage took the next three points to make it 23-19, but Millikin went on to win, 25-20. The Big Blue jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the fifth-and-final set. After the Lady Reds closed to within two, 5-3, Millikin ran off four-straight points to take a 9-3 lead and outscored Carthage, 6-2, down the stretch to win, 15-5.

Kelsy England led Millikin with 23 kills and a .259 attack percentage, while Abby Ott had 14 kills and hit .297. Lauren Dembkowski (Jr., Mount Prospect, Ill./Arlington Heights-Hersey), this weeks' CCIW Women's Volleyball “Offensive Player of the Week,” had 15 kills and hit .250, while Michelle Madeja (Jr., Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) had 19 kills.

On Friday-Saturday, Oct. 22-23, the Lady Reds travel to La Crosse, Wis., for the Wisconsin-La Crosse Tournament at Mitchell Hall. On Friday, Oct. 22, Carthage plays Wisconsin-Superior at 5:30 p.m. and the host-Eagles at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, Oct. 23, the Lady Reds take on Wisconsin-River Falls at 10:30 a.m. and Luther College at 12:30 p.m.
