The Carthage College women's track and field team (25-3), ranked 17th in the Jan. 27 U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, finished second at the Jan. 30 Carthage “Tadd Metzger Invitational” at the Tarble Athletic and Recreation in Kenosha, Wis. NCAA Division I Northern Illinois University won the 16-team event with 244 points, followed by Carthage second at 151, St. Xavier University third at 56, Judson University fourth at 47, the Milwaukee School of Engineering fifth at 37, Concordia University (Chicago) and Trinity Christian College tied for sixth at 21 points each, the Wisconsin Track Club eighth at 20, Robert Morris University ninth at 17, the Buffalos 10th with nine points, the College of DuPage and the Greater Milwaukee Track Club tied for 11th at eight points each, Wisconsin Lutheran College 13th with five points, Benedictine University 14th with four points, Rockford College 15th with three and Athletics Best 16th with two points.
Carthage's Ahvia Greene (Jr., Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) won the weight throw (56-8 3/4). Mindy Harrington (Jr., Spring Grove, Ill./Richmond-Burton) finished second in the weight throw (52-6 ¾) and third in the shot put (38-11 ½). Julia Hiett (Sr., Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) finished second in the 600-meter run (1:46.58), as did Karin Wirth (Fr., Springfield, Ill./Pleasant Plains) in the 800-meter run (2:28.45) and Morgan Wiechmann (So, Sleepy Hollow, Ill./Carpentersville—Dundee-Crown) in the 1,000-meter run (3:16.58).
Christine Nelson (So., Rock City, Ill./Dakota) finished third in the 400-meter dash (1:03.04), as did Sarah Thompson (So., Byron, Ill.) in the high jump (4-11 ½), Melissa Purta (Sr., Inverness, Ill./Rolling Meadows) in the pole vault (8-6), Joslyn Drew (So., Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) in the triple jump (33-5 ¼) and Amanda Inkinen (Jr., East Dundee, Ill./Carpentersville—Dundee-Crown) in the weight throw (43-7 ¼). The Lady Reds travel to Bloomington, Ill., on Friday-Saturday, Feb. 5-6 for the Illinois Wesleyan University Invitational at the Shirk Center (3 p.m./11 a.m.).
