No. 17 Lady Reds Play Host to Millikin on Saturday

The Carthage College women's basketball team (13-3, 3-2 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked 17th in the Jan. 19 Women's Basketball Coaches Association/USA Today/ESPN NCAA Division III poll and 19th in the Jan. 19 “D3hoops.com” poll, upended CCIW-opponent North Central College (3-13, 0-5 CCIW), 72-49, on Tuesday, Jan. 19 at Merner Fieldhouse/Gregory Arena in Naperville, Ill.  The win left the Lady Reds in a three-way tie for third place in the league, along with Millikin University and Wheaton College (Ill.).
 
Carthage jumped out to a 10-point lead, 22-12, at 10:19 first half. North Central closed the gap to five points at halftime, 32-27. The second half belonged to the Lady Reds, who out-scored the Cardinals, 40-22. Carthage went back up by 10 points, 46-36, at 14:14, and the lead went to 20 points, 57-37, at 7:37. The Lady Reds led by as much as 26 points, 67-41, at 3:15 and went on to win by 25, 72-49. 

Carthage shot 47 percent (29-62), while North Central shot 33 percent (20-60). The Lady Reds had a narrow, 40-38 edge on the boards. Four Carthage players scored in double figures. Diana Jacklin (So., Berwyn, Ill./Morton West) scored 14 points on six-of-13 field goals and two-of-four free throws, along with nine rebounds and four assists. Dani Ripkey (So., Deerfield, Ill.) had 11 points, Heather Gilmore (Sr., Des Moines, Iowa/Pleasant Hill-Southeast) 10 points, four rebounds and five assists, and Rosie Dorn (Sr., Chicago, Ill./Wilmette-Regina Dominican) chipped in 10 points. The Cardinals' Jackie Errico scored a game-high 15 points, while Latrice Newson had 14 points and game-high 11 rebounds. Carthage plays host to conference-opponent Millikin University (9-7, 3-2 CCIW) on Saturday, Jan. 23 in a 2 p.m. contest at Tarble Arena in Kenosha, Wis.
