The Carthage College women's track and field team (3-0) opened its indoor season by winning the Jan. 9 Carthage Opener/Alumni Meet at the Tarble Athletic and Recreation Center in Kenosha, Wis. Carthage won the six-team event with 173.50 points, followed by Ashford University second at 95, the Milwaukee School of Engineering third at 78, the Greater Milwaukee Track Club fourth at 42, Concordia University (Wis.) fifth at 34 and the Carthage alumni sixth with 29 points.
The Lady Reds collected wins from Sarah Thompson (So., Byron, Ill.) in the high jump (5-1 ¼) and Mindy Harrington (Jr., Spring Grove, Ill./Richmond-Burton) in the shot put (41-0 ½). Molly Chlum (So., Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) finished second in the 55-meter dash (7.58), as did Karin Wirth (Fr., Springfield, Ill./Pleasant Plains) in the 600-meter run (1:47.50), Joslyn Drew (So., Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) in the long jump (15-10 ½) and Ahvia Greene (Jr., Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) in the weight throw (52-5 ½). Carthage plays host to the Private College Invitational on Friday-Saturday, Jan. 15-16, also at the Tarble Athletic and Recreation Center (3 p.m./10:30 a.m.).
