No. 14 Carthage Women's Basketball Defeats Coe College, 72-65, on Dec. 21

The Carthage College women's basketball team (8-1, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked 14th in the Dec. 15 Women's Basketball Coaches Association/USA Today/ESPN NCAA Division III poll and 24th in the Dec. 15 “D3hoops.com” poll, defeated Coe College (4-5), 72-65, on Monday, Dec. 21 at Tarble Arena in Kenosha, Wis.
 
The game started out looking like an easy night for the Lady Reds, but it turned into a barn-burner before things were over. Carthage opened up a 16-point lead, 30-14, at 5:53 first half and led by as much as 20 points, 44-24, late in the period. The Lady Reds led the Kohawks by 17 at the break, 44-27. 
 
Carthage still led by 17, 49-32, at 17:01 before Coe began to chip away. The Kohawks pulled to within 10 points, 59-49, at 7:54, and then things really got interesting. After Carthage went back up by 11, 60-49, at 7:23, Coe went on a 15-5 run to make it a one-point game, 65-64, at 1:06. Carthage's Diana Jacklin scored on a layup with 40 seconds to go to make it a three-point game, 67-64. Coe's Sarah Anciaux made a free throw with 28 seconds remaining to cut the lead to 67-65, but the Lady Reds took care of business at the free-throw line in the final 23 seconds to ice the win. Rosie Dorn converted two free throws with 23 seconds to go, Dani Ripkey one at the 14-second mark, and Dorn made two more with one second remaining for the final 72-65 margin.
 
Both team shot the ball well. Carthage shot 51 percent (28-55), while Coe shot 49 percent (23-47). The Lady Reds edged the Kohawks off the boards, 34-28. Four Carthage starters scored in double figures. Rosie Dorn (Sr., Chicago, Ill./Wilmette-Regina Dominican) had a game-high 21 points on eight-of-13 field goals, along with five-of-six free throws and seven rebounds. Diana Jacklin (So., Berwyn, Ill./Morton West) had 12 points and eight rebounds, Dani Ripkey (So., Deerfield, Ill.) 12 points with five rebounds and five assists, and Heather Gilmore (Sr., Des Moines, Iowa/Pleasant Hill-Southeast) scored 12 points with five assists. Kayla Lincoln topped Coe with 17 points and five boards, while Sarah Anciaux had 15 points and four rebounds.
 
Carthage travels to Atlanta, Ga., on Monday-Tuesday, Dec. 28-29 to play in the Oglethorpe University “Holiday Classic” at the Dorough Fieldhouse. On Monday, Dec. 28, Carthage plays No. 1 Hope College (9-0) at 6 p.m., EST, with the host-Stormy Petrels (5-3) taking on Piedmont College (2-5) at 8 p.m., EST. The consolation and championship games will be played on Tuesday, Dec. 29 at 1 and 3 p.m., EST.
