The Carthage College women's volleyball team (24-4, 6-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked ninth in the Oct. 27 American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll and third in the Oct. 21 NCAA Division III Midwest Regional poll, went 2-1 at the Friday-Saturday, Oct. 23-24 Heidelberg College Quadrangular at the Seiberling Gymnasium in Tiffin, Ohio. On Friday, Oct. 23, Carthage swept Webster University (14-10), 3-0, with winning set scores of 25-16, 25-18 and 25-15. On Saturday, Oct. 24, No. 7 Wittenberg University (21-4) defeated the Lady Reds, 3-1, before Carthage stopped No. 17 Heidelberg (24-5), 3-0. Wittenberg's winning scores over Carthage were 25-10, 25-23, 17-25 and 25-22. Carthage's winning scores over Heidelberg were 26-24, 25-15 and 25-22.
In the win over Webster University on Oct. 23, right-side player Rachel Swoboda (Jr., De Pere, Wis./Wrightstown) had 10 kills and hit .435. Outside hitter Lauren Dembkowski (So., Mount Prospect, Ill./Arlington Heights-Hersey) had nine kills, and middle blocker Jordan Burkholder (So., Rockford, Ill./Christian Life) collected seven kills and hit. 600. Setter Drewann Pancratz (So., Schaumburg, Ill.) averaged 12.00 assists per set, while middle blocker Amanda Matusky (Sr., Hickory Hills, Ill./Palos Hills-Stagg) had five block assists. Burkholder had eight kills in the Lady Reds' 3-1 loss to Wittenberg University on Oct. 24, while Swoboda had seven kills. Dembkowski collected 12 kills and hit .270 in Carthage's 3-0 sweep of Heidelberg College on Oct. 24, while Swoboda had eight kills and hit .269.
Carthage travels to Decatur, Ill., on Wednesday, Oct. 28 to play CCIW-opponent Millikin University (18-14, 2-4 CCIW) in a 7 p.m. match at the Griswold Center. The Lady Reds, who have already clinched at least a share of the conference title, its eighth in school history, can claim its fifth-consecutive outright championship with a win over the Big Blue.
