The Carthage College women's soccer team (5-7, 0-3 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) was shut out by CCIW-opponent Wheaton College (Ill.. 11-2, 3-0 CCIW), 4-0, on Friday, Oct. 9 at Joe Bean Stadium in Wheaton, Ill. The Thunder were ranked 13th in the Oct. 6 National Soccer Coaches Association of America NCAA Division III poll and third in the NSCAA Central Region poll.
The Thunder took a 1-0 halftime lead behind a penalty-kick goal by Jaime Orweiler at 7:45. In the second half, Taryne Lee scored her 14th goal of the at 61:44 to make it 2-0. Val Lelle's header goal, assisted by Brittany Bergh, at 67:43 bumped the Thunder's lead to 3-0. One minute later at 68:46, Mary Beth Grove scored to make it a 4-0 contest. Wheaton (Ill.) out-shot Carthage by a 26-5 margin. The Lady Reds travel to Decatur, Ill., on Wednesday, Oct. 14 to play CCIW-opponent Millikin University (9-4-1, 1-1 CCIW) in a 3 p.m. game at the Millikin Soccer Complex.
