Herman Abban begins his second year as a Carthage College graduate assistant tennis coach in 2020-21 following two standout years on the Firebirds team. 
 
Abban, a native of Accra, Ghana, attended the New Mexico Military Institute, a longtime pipeline to Carthage men’s tennis, his freshman and sophomore years before transferring to Carthage for the 2016-17 academic year.
 
Abban compiled a 30-4 record at No. 1 singles in 2017 and was named an Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American, as well as the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin “Men’s Tennis Player of the Year” and CCIW “Men’s Tennis Newcomer of the Year.”  He qualified for the NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Championship in both singles and doubles.  He and his doubles partner, Pawel Jaworski, went 34-4 and reached the national semifinals.  Abban repeated as CCIW “Men’s Tennis Player of the Year” in 2018 with a 27-3 mark. 
 
He graduated in 2018 with a bachelor’s degree in biology and is working on his master’s degree in education, also from Carthage.
