Samantha Saalfeld joined the Carthage Athletic Training staff in the fall of 2020. She received her bachelor's degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in exercise and fitness from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in 2015. She then went on to pursue her Master's of Athletic Training from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Saalfeld interned at Northwestern University in 2018 where she worked closely with Football. She is a member of the NATA Public Relations Committee and the WATA Young Professionals Committee. Saalfeld is the primary provider for men's soccer, men's and women's swim and dive, women's water polo and women's lacrosse.

Taylor DeGroot joined the Carthage College athletic training staff in the summer of 2021. She received her bachelor’s degree in athletic training from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in 2019. She then continued her education, receiving her master’s degree in kinesiology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the spring of 2021. During her time at UW-Madison, she was a graduate assistant in the kinesiology department, teaching undergraduate student anatomy and anatomy lab. While obtaining her master’s degree, she worked two years at Richland Center High School. 

In Summer 2026, DeGroot stepped into the role of Intertim Co-Head Athletic Trainer at Carthage College, continuing her commitment to leading and advancing the sports medicine program while supporting the health and success of Firebird student-athletes. DeGroot's primary sports are women's volleyball, men's and women's wrestling, esports, softball. 

 

Stanners-Claire    Claire Stanners: Athletic Trainer

    Claire Stanners joined the Carthage Athletic Training staff in July 2023. She received her masters degree in Athletic Training from Marquette University in the spring of 2023. She completed an exercise physiology undergraduate program at Marquette, and is a board certified athletic trainer. Claire completed her full immersive clinical rotation at MSOE while working with men's volleyball, lacrosse, wrestling, and track & field. She is the primary provider for men's and women's cross country, men's and women's track and field, men's lacrosse and bowling.

    Samual Kotsonas joined the Carthage Athletic Training staff in August 2023.  He received his bachelor's degree in Athletic Training from Carthage in the spring of 2023.  He is a board certified athletic trainer and obtained his Wisconsin AT license in July 2023.  Sam graduated with his Masters of Education in May 2025, from Carthage. He is the primary provider for women's soccer, men's basketball and baseball.

    Becca McDaniel joined the Carthage Athletic Training staff in November 2025.  She received her Bachelors of Science in Exercise Science in 2023 and Masters of Science in Athletic Training in 2025, both from Carroll University.  As a student she obtained experience with Carroll University football and a full immersive clinical rotation at Creighton University with women's basketball.  Becca is the primary provider for football, women's basketball, men's and women's tennis.

Ray Knight brings more than 20 years of collegiate athletic training experience to Carthage, having previously served at Sewanee, Marietta College, and Valparaiso University. He oversees athletic training coverage for football, men's volleyball, men's and women's golf.

Tom Regan joined the Carthage Athletic Training staff in the spring of 2026. He received his bachelor's degree as a double major in Exercise Science and Athletic Training from Carroll University in 2018. He interned at the University of Arizona in 2018 where he worked closely with baseball and cheer. Regan is the rehab coordinator for all NCAA affiliated Carthage sports athletes and teams.  Additionally, Tom is an employee of Comprehensive Orthopaedics and works alongside Carthage team physicians Dr. Pick-Jacobs and Dr. Donovitch in clinic.
