Firebirds Fall to Maroons in Regular Season Finale

CHICAGO, Ill. - The Carthage softball team concluded the 2026 regular season with a trip to the Windy City to take on the University of Chicago Maroons on Tuesday afternoon. It was a tough conclusion to the regular season schedule, as the Firebirds were swept by the Maroons after being outscored 15-8 over two games.



GAME ONE

The Firebirds got on the board first to open the game as Gwen Hendrick hit a single to center field to bring home Clare Rettler and give Carthage a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

The Maroons answered back in the bottom of the second inning with a two-run home run for Mia Bocian to give UChicago a 2-1 lead. An RBI double in the third inning for Olivia Cataldo extended the lead to 3-0. 

Chicago added on to their lead in the fifth inning with an RBI single to Madeline Murphy and an RBI double from Cataldo to give the Maroons a 5-1 advantage.

The Firebirds cut into the deficit in the sixth inning with a sacrifice flyout from Olivia Hristov brought home Rettler to make it a 5-2 game. The Maroons answered right back with an RBI single from Murphy to bring the final score to 6-2.

GAME TWO

The Maroons kicked off the scoring in the second game with an RBI single to center field to give Chicago a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Natalie Antin added on to the lead in the bottom of the second with an RBI infield single to extend the lead to 2-0.

The Carthage offense came alive in the third inning with a Maroons' error allowing Rettler and Hana Adler to score to tie the game at 2-2. A sacrifice flyout from Hristov brought home Rylee Boyd to give the Firebirds a 3-2 lead, before Rachael Setterstrom hit an RBI single to bring home Hendrick to extend the lead. Angela Parker then singled to right center to score Setterstrom and give the Firebirds a 5-2 lead.

In the top of the fourth inning, Hendrick hit a sacrifice flyout to center field to bring home Rettler and extend the lead further to 6-2. In the bottom of the inning, Antin scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 6-3.

The Maroons bounced back in the fifth inning, utilizing a sacrifice flyout and an RBI single to place three more runs and tie the game at 6-6. The Maroons then added three more runs in the sixth to take the win with a final score of 9-6.
