Firebirds Split Road Series at Carroll

WAUKESHA, Wis. - The Carthage softball team traveled north for a midweek doubleheader against the Carroll University Pioneers on Tuesday afternoon. The Firebirds cruised to victory in the opening game, holding Carroll to just one hit in the game. The Pioneers bounced back with a strong offensive first inning in the finale to win game two and earn the series split.



GAME ONE

The Firebirds got on the board in the top of the first with Gwen Hendrick hitting an RBI double to center field to score Clare Rettler and give Carthage a 1-0 lead. Emma Faubel pitched a one-two-three inning in the bottom of the first.

Carthage then added to the lead in the top of the third as Hendrick hit an RBI single to right field, scoring Rettler and Leiah Cardona to bring the score to 3-0. Hendrick then scored on an error to extend the lead to 4-0.

Hendrick again brought a run home a run in the sixth inning with a base hit that scored Rettler. Olivia Hristov then singled to score Rylee Boyd. Isabel Bates then grounded out to second base which allowed Hendrick to score, before an RBI single for Peyton Kryza brought home Hristov to give Carthage a 9-0 lead. The Pioneers started the inning off with a walk but Faubel closed out the game to earn the complete game shutout.

GAME TWO

The Firebirds offense stayed hot to start the second game, with Hristov hitting an RBI single to score Boyd and Hendrick to give Carthage a 2-0 lead. An RBI double for Rachael Setterstrom scored Hristov to extend the lead to 3-0. The Pioneers answered right back in the bottom of the first, scoring their first run of the day on a bases loaded walk for Alexa Gatz. Three consecutive base hits brought home three more runs and the Pioneers took a 4-3 lead. 

The Pioneers added an insurance run in the fourth inning with Gatz singling to left field to score Abigail Curtis and make it a 5-3 ballgame. The Pioneers would hold that lead for the remainder of the game to earn the series split with the Firebirds.
