Softball Cruises Past Beloit for Road Doubleheader Sweep

BELOIT — The Carthage College softball team returned to action in Beloit, Wisconsin Friday afternoon. The Firebirds faced the Buccaneers for a doubleheader, earning the sweep. 

How it Happened
Game One
  • The Firebirds got on the board early with three runs in the first. Kristina Chronos started it for the Firebirds by reaching first on a throwing error. Addison Simonson advanced Chronos to third with a double to left center. Izzy Hernandez came to the plate next and hit a three run homerun to put the Firebirds up by three (3-0). 
  • In the bottom of the first, the Firebirds had a quick inning holding the Buccaneers to no hits and no runners left on base.
  • Tallulah Finegold started the top of the second for the Firebirds with a homerun to left center advancing the Firebirds' lead to 4-0. With two outs, Clare Rettler singled to third base on a bunt. Chronos singled to right field to advance Rettler to third. Simonson got on base with a walk. Hernandez came up next, tripling to right field, scoring Simonson, Chronos, and Rettler (7-0). Gwen Hendrick singled to second base and scored Hernandez to force the Firebirds lead 8-0. 
  • The Buccaneers collected one hit and had one left on base in the bottom of the second (8-0).
  • In the top of the third, the Firebirds continued to increase their lead. Hana Adler started it off for the Firebirds, singling up the middle. After a walk and a passed ball, the Firebirds had two birds in scoring position. Rettler singled to center field scoring Adler (9-0). Leiah Cardona came in to pinch hit for Chronos, singling up the middle and scoring Rettler and Finegold (11-0).
  • The Buccaneers collected two hits and had two left on base in the bottom of the third (11-0). 
  • Beloit held the Firebirds scoreless in the top of the fourth, recording one hit and leaving one on base (11-0). 
  • In the bottom of the fourth, the Buccaneers had a scoreless inning (11-0).
  • The Firebirds left two on base in the top of the fifth and recorded two hits (11-0).
  • Carthage ended game one early in a run rule after the bottom of the fifth, taking the win over the Buccaneers 11-0. 

Game Two
  • The Firebirds opened game two early taking the lead in the top of the first. Rettler started the birds off with a single bunt. Chronos singled up the middle advancing Rettler. The Firebirds scored two with Simonson's single (2-0). 
  • The Buccaneers had a scoreless first inning with no hits and no one left on base (2-0).
  • Adler started the top of the second with a double to left center. With one out, Rettler singled to the pitcher with a bunt. Chronos doubled to right center to score Adler (3-0). Simonson grounded out to the shortstop and scored Rettler, forcing the Firebirds lead to 4-0.
  • In the bottom of the second, the Buccaneers scored one run to dig into the Firebirds lead (4-1).
  • To start the third inning, Hendrick singled up the middle to get the Firebirds started. Olivia Hristov homered to left center increasing the Firebirds' lead, 6-1. 
  • The Firebirds held the Buccaneers in the bottom of the third to no runs, one hit, and one left on base (6-1). 
  • In the top of the fourth, the Firebirds recorded one hit and had one left on base (6-1). 
  • The Buccaneers recorded one hit and two left on base in the bottom of the fourth (6-1).
  • In the top of the fifth, the Firebirds had a scoreless inning with one hit and one left on base (6-1).
  • The Buccaneers record one left on base in the bottom of the fifth (6-1).
  • To start the sixth inning, Chronos reached on and error, Simonson reached on a fielders choice, and Hernandez reached on an error. Hendrick doubled to center field to score Simonson, unearned (7-1). Hristov grounded out and scored Hernandez, also unearned (8-1). The Firebirds' lead grew after Cardona singled through the left side, scoring Hendrick (9-1).
  • The Firebirds ended game two early in the bottom of the sixth, taking the win over the Buccaneers 9-1.

High Flyers
  • In game one, Rettler led the Firebirds with two runs and four hits on four plate appearances. 
  • In game two, with four at bats, Hendrick led the Firebirds with four hits and two runs.
  • Maddie Conway recorded the win in the circle for game one (8-1).
  • Hristov recorded the win in the circle for game two (4-4).
  • The Firebirds collected 31 hits over 35 plate appearances on the day.
