Strong Middle Weights Keep Firebirds Close in Aurora Matchup

AURORA — The Carthage College men's wrestling team put together a competitive effort on Wednesday night, coming up short in a 24-17 road College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) dual against Aurora.

After Aurora opened with a win at 125 pounds, the Firebirds struck back at 133. Chris Kish delivered a strong nine-five decision to put Carthage on the board. The Spartans added six at 141, but Carthage answered again. At 149, Edgar Albino battled through a high-scoring bout and came away with a 13-10 victory, keeping the Firebirds firmly in the mix.

Aurora earned a decision at 157, but Carthage responded with two composed performances in the middle weights. At 165, Maxwell Schmitt controlled the pace throughout a seven-zero decision. CJ Gilbert followed at 174, grinding out a 1-0 win that continued the Firebirds' push as the lineup moved toward the upper weights.

Aurora claimed a decision at 184, but Carthage produced one of the night's standout moments at 197. Elvis Muja delivered a fall in 1:18, giving the Firebirds a major boost heading into heavyweight.

Aurora secured the dual with a fall at 285, closing out the evening. Carthage will now play North Central (Ill.) in their home opener on November 20 at 7 p.m.
