Women’s Water Polo Opens the 2025 Season at the Indiana Classic

BLOOMINGTON - The Carthage College water polo team opened the 2025 season traveling to Bloomington, Ind. to compete in the Indiana Classic. The Firebirds played four games in the two day classic. On day one the Carthage Firebirds competed against the UC-Santa Barbara Gauchos and the UC-Merced Bobcats. Day two, the Firebirds took on the California State-Northridge Matadors and the McKendree Bearcats.

How it Happened
Game One
  • The Firebirds took 13 shots on the Gauchos.
  • Mak Werner led the Firebirds in shots with five.
  • Rylee McGee collected five saves.
Game Two
  • Werner scored two goals in the first period.
  • In the second period, Xiomara Trejo scored two goals and Werner scored one.
  • Kiera Crawley and Yamila Areizaga scored in the third period.
  • Kira Jacobsen led the Firebirds in goals in the fourth period.
  • The Firebirds took 20 shots on the Bobcats.
  • Werner led the Firebirds in shots with six and Crawley led in assists with two.
  • McGee collected eight saves. 
Game Three
  • Grace Steinberg led the Firebirds in goals in the first period.
  • In the third period, Sarah Lowery scored one goal.
  • McGee scored one goal in the fourth period.
  • The Firebirds took 21 shots on the Matadors.
  • Werner led the Firebirds in shots with six and Areizaga led in assists with one.
  • McGee collected 10 saves in goal.
Game Four
  • In the first period Areizaga scored one goal.
  • Morrigan Bushroe scored in the second period.
  • The Firebirds had two goals in the third period by Lowery and Bushroe.
  • Trejo, Steinberg, and Faith Harris put up goals in the fourth period.

High Flyers
  • McGee recorded 23 saves on the weekend.
  • Werner led the team in shots with 17.
  • The Firebirds took 54 shots on the weekend.
  • Crawley led the team in assists with two. 

Up Next
