Firebirds Pick Up Three Wins at CWPA Tourney, Prepare For Road Trip

Box Score 1 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 ERIE, PA. - The Carthage women's water polo team ended the weekend with three wins across the four games played against Penn State Behrend, Connecticut, Grove City, and Wheaton College at the CWPA Crossover Tourney on Saturday and Sunday.

How it Happened
Game One
  • The Firebirds struggled during the first period, entering the second period behind 1-0.  
  • Grace Steinberg kicked off the Firebirds' offense with a score in the eighth minute of the second period, evening the score 1-1. 
  • Kylie Hemming built on the momentum, finding the net in the third minute of the second period, 2-0. 
  • Faith Harris closed out the offensive effort for the Firebirds with a score in the final ten seconds of the first half, giving Carthage a 3-2 lead over Penn State Behrend.
  • The Firebirds went scoreless in the third period, trailing 5-3 at the start of the final period. 
  • Penn State Behrend found the net at the start of the fourth period, and Carthage's Yamila Areizaga found the net twice in the final five minutes of the game. 
  • Despite the final effort, Carthage fell 6-5 against Penn State Behrend. 
Game Two
  • Kylie Hemming got Carthage on the board with a score in the seventh and sixth minute of the first period, 2-1. 
  • Alyssa Sayatovic added to the offensive effort with another score in the fifth minute of the first period, 3-1. 
  • Abigail Karpluk, Emily Steingard, and Brenna Carstens each found the net in the final four minutes of the first period, securing a 6-2 lead over Wheaton. 
  • Carthage began the second period ahead 6-2. 
  • Wheaton added a score in the beginning minutes of the second period, and Carthages' Brenna Carstens scored another score in the fourth minute, 7-3. 
  • Faith Harris and Sarah Lowery found the net in the final two minutes of the first half, giving Carthage a 9-3 lead over Wheaton. 
  • Taylor Woitesek added to the offensive effort with a score in the final minutes of the third period, 10-3. 
  • Despite going scoreless in the fourth period, Carthage defeated Wheaton 10-5. 
Game Three
  • Victoria Hodges and Brenna Carstens kicked off the Firebird offense with goals in the eighth minute of the first period, 2-0
  • Kylie Hemming added to the Firebirds' offensive effort with a goal in the sixth minute of the first period, 3-0.
  • Despite a quick score from Grove City, the Firebirds maintained the momentum, with Grace Steinberg and Brenna Carstens scoring in the final two minutes of the first period, 5-1.
  •  Kylie Kemming extended the Firebirds' lead with a score in the eighth minute of the second period, 6-1. 
  • Grove City chipped away at the lead, but the Firebirds responded with Emily Steingard and Grace Steinberg scoring in the final four minutes of the first half, 8-2.
  • The Firebirds led 8-3 at the half.  
  • Grace Steinberg opened the third period with a score in the fifth minute, improving the Firebirds' lead to 9-3. 
  • Kylie Hemming closed out the offensive effort in the third period, and the Firebirds began the fourth period up 10-4.
  • Kylie Hemming and Taylor Woitesek both scored in the opening minutes of the final period, extending Carthage's lead to 12-4 with five minutes remaining. 
  • Carthage defeated Grove City 12-7.

  • Carthage will continue play at the Connectitcut College Tournament on Saturday, April 20th.
