Firebirds End Season With Big Win At CWPA Tourney

NEW LONDON, CONN. - The Carthage women's water polo team ended the weekend with one win across the three games played against Macalester, Penn State Behrend, and Connecticut College at the CWPA Division III Tourney on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

How it Happened​

Game One

  • The Firebirds struggled early, trailing 3-0 with three minutes left in the first period.  
  • Yamila Areizaga got the Firebirds on the board with a score in the final minutes of the period, 3-1. 
  • Brenna Carstens maintained the offensive effort, scoring in the seventh minute of the second period, 3-2. 
  • Abigail Karpluk found the net in the final second of the second period, and Carthage entered halftime behind 6-3. 
  • The Firebirds went scoreless in the third period, entering the final period down 8-3.
  • Victoria Hodges closed out the Firebirds offense with a final score in the sixth minute of the fourth period, 8-4. 
  • Carthage ended 11-4 against Macalester.

Game Two

  • After a quick score from Penn, Carthage's Brenna Carstens ignited the offense with three back-to-back goals in the first period, 3-1.
  • Grace Steinberg increased the score with a score in the last minute of the first period, securing the Firebirds' 4-2 lead over Penn. 
  • Brenna Carstens found the net again in the last five minutes of the first half, improving Carthage's lead to 5-2. 
  • The Firebirds led 5-2 at the half. 
  • Carthage maintained the momentum, and Yamila Areizaga added to the effort with two scores in two minutes, 7-3.
  • Alyssa Sayatovic followed suit with two scores in the final two minutes of the third period, 9-4. 
  • The Firebirds entered the final period ahead 9-4. 
  • Alyssa Sayatovic scored once more early in the fourth quarter, 10-5. 
  • Faith Harris closed out the Firebirds' offensive effort with a goal in the last two minutes of the game, 11-6. 
  • Carthage defeated Penn 11-7. 

Game Three

  • Alyssa Sayatovic kicked off the offensive effort with a score in the seventh minute of the first period, 1-1.
  • Yamila Areizaga built on the offensive momentum, finding the net in the eighth minute of the second period, 2-1. 
  • Victoria Hodges increased the Firebirds' lead, to 3-1, in the fifth minute of the second period.
  • Both teams found the net multiple times in the last five minutes of the first half and entered halftime at an even 5-5. 
  • Both teams maintained the back-and-forth in the opening minutes of the third period, with a goal from Alyssa Sayatovic maintaining the score 6-6. 
  • The Firebirds ended the third period trailing 9-6. 
  • Kylie Hemming and Alyssa Sayatovic found the net in the final two minutes of the fourth period, ending the offensive effort for the Firebirds, 8-10.
  • Carthage fell 11-8 against Connecticut.
