Softball Comes Up Short on Opening Day

Gordon 6, Carthage 5
Lebanon Valley 5, Carthage 2

CLERMONT, Fla. -
The Carthage softball team began the 2024 season in Florida with a pair of games against the Gordon College Scots and the Lebanon Valley College Flying Dutchmen.

How it Happened

VS GORDON

The Firebirds jumped out to an early lead in the first inning as Izzy Hernandez hit a single to left field to bring home Clare Rettler.

The Scots evened the score in the bottom of the second on an RBI walk. Gordon used a pair of RBI singles to add three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to jump out to a 4-1 lead.

The Firebirds did not let the deficit stand for long, as Kristina Chronos hit a double to right field to bring home Rettler and Abby Wierzbicki. Gwen Hendrick hit a triple in the following at bat to bring home Chronos and even the score at 4-4. Hernandez reached first safely on an infield error, which brought home Hendrick and put Carthage back on top 5-4.

A rally in the bottom of the fifth inning lifted the Scots back into the lead thanks to a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch. The two runs would be enough to give the Scots the victory.

VS LEBANON VALLEY

The Dutchmen got out to an early lead, scoring a run in the top of the first and another pair of runs in the top half of the second.

The Firebirds cut into the deficit in the bottom of the second, as Rettler hit a single to left center field to bring home Kelly Gaiser and Cynthia Ibarra. After two innings the Dutchmen lead 3-2.

Lebanon Valley plated a run in the fifth and another in the seventh to come away with the win.

High Flyers

  • Rettler is off to a hot start on the season, going 7-7 at the plate with a walk, two runs, and two RBIs
  • Olivia Hristov tallied five strikeouts over 5.2 innings in relief against Lebanon Valley
