ST. PETER – The Carthage men's tennis team competed in the ITA Regional Tournament at Gustavus Adolphus over the weekend. The opening two rounds of the singles tournament took place on Friday, as well as the opening round of the doubles tournament. Saturday featured the next three rounds of doubles and the next three rounds of singles play. Sunday hosted the semifinals and finals for doubles along with the quarterfinals and semifinals for the singles tournament. The finals for singles play took place on Monday morning.

 

SINGLES

Francisco Silveira received a bye in the opening round as the no. 5 seed in the tournament. He then defeated Yash Bahalkar (Gustavus Adolphus) 6-1, 6-3 on Friday afternoon to advance to the Saturday portion of the tournament. Silveira opened the third round with a 3-6, 6-2, (10-5) victory over Jasper Yang (Carleton). Silveira's weekend came to an end in the fourth round with a 7-6, 6-2 loss to Taona Mhwandagara (GAC).

Finn Morris also opened the tournament with a first round bye. He battled through the second round with a 6-2, 3-6, (20-18) victory over Chase Lindwall (Wis-Whitewater). Morris advanced into Saturday, where he began the day with a win over Henry Park (Grinnell), defeating Park 6-1, 6-0. Morris went on to lose in the fourth round 6-4, 6-3 to Tyler Haddoff (GAC).

Cyriac Cayuela opened the tournament with a pair of 6-1 victories over Eamon Gerard (St. Scholastica). Cayuela then earned a 6-4, 4-6, (10-6) win over Will Ulrich (Wis-Whitewater) to advance to day two, where he would fall in the third round to Takura Mhwandagara (GAC) 6-2, 3-6, (10-6).

Cooper Ferruzzi opened the tournament with a bye before defeating Ivan Burt Smith (Coe) 4-6, 7-5, (10-8). Ferruzzi then fell to Wilder Cooke (Grinnell) 6-2, 6-2. 

Luca Okino opened the weekend with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Zack Chaffey (Bethel). He was then defeated by Giovanni Vitali (Wis-Whitewater) 6-2, 6-4.

Diego Silva advanced to the second round on a bye before falling to Ty Schneider (Wis-La Crosse) 1-6, 6-2, (10-4).

DOUBLES

Silveira and Ferruzzi opened doubles play with an 8-4 win over Grinnell to advance to Saturday. The duo then defeated St. Scholastica 8-1 to advance to the round of 16. The Firebirds squad advanced to the round of eight with an 8-2 victory over Gustavus Adolphus. Silveira and Ferruzzi went on to drop an 8-4 match against the top seeded team from Gustavus Adolphus.

Marco Czosnyka and Daniel Jaworski were defeated 8-6 in the opening round by a duo from St. John's. 

Silva and Okino dropped their opening round match against Grinnell 8-6.

Morris and Cayuela opened the weekend with an 8-2 win over Wis-Eau Claire. The duo then earned an 8-6 victory against Wis-Whitewater, before defeating Coe with another 8-6 performance. The duo fell in the round of eight 8-3 to a duo from Gustavus Adolphus.
