ST. LOUIS, Mo. - In the first round of the 2023 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Men's Tennis Championships, the Carthage Firebirds defeated Covenant College (Ga.) 5-2 to advance to a second match in WashU's regional. The win for Carthage in the NCAA Tournament is the program's first team win since 2016, when Carthage defeated John Carroll 5-3 in Chicago, Illinois.
Carthage has taken on WashU in the big dance on a number of occasions, last doing so in 2015. The Firebirds have matched up with the Bears in three of its last four trips to the NCAA Tournament, falling each time.
Heading into tomorrow's regional match with the Bears, Carthage has now won ten consecutive matches for the first time since the team won 12 in a row in 2021-2022.
