Firebirds Conclude CWPA Championships

ST. PAUL, Minn.  — The Carthage College women's water polo team wrapped up the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Tournament over the weekend as the Firebirds won their opening match over Penn State Behrend 9-8.

How it Happened
  • Carthage began the tournament with five unanswered goals from Morrigan Bushroe-Stumpf, Kaylin Machuca, and Victoria Hodges.
  • In the second quarter, Hodges netted her third as Carthage held a 6-1 score. 
  • After Penn State Behrend netted two, Carthage closed out the quarter with a pair of goals from Katlynn LaGrone and Hodges. 
  • Alyssa Sayatovic found the back of the net to start the third.
  • Penn State Behrend responded with five-straight goals changing the lead to 9-8 with under 30 seconds left to play. 
  • Goalkeeper Ella Selman made a last-second save to win it for Carthage. Selman was named Player of the Game for her efforts.  
 
  • In the second game in Minnesota, Augustana (Ill.) controlled a 2-0 lead heading to the second quarter. 
  • Brenna Carstens shrunk the lead to 4-1 with a goal at the 3:04 mark. 
  • Another goal from Carstens with 32 seconds remaining in the half changed the score to 6-2. 
  • The Vikings responded with four goals until Bushroe-Stumpf found the back of the net with 4:31 left to play in the third. 
  • Augustana (Ill.) ended the quarter with three goals. 
  • Machuca scored one for the Firebirds at the 7:30 mark of the fourth, but the Vikings went on to win 18-6. 
 
  • In the third game, following Washington and Jefferson got on the board first, four unanswered goals closed out the quarter for Carthage flipping the score to 4-1. 
  • Washington and Jefferson responded with four-straight goals in the second. 
  • A goal from Machuca and two from Alyssa Sayatovic gave Carthage a 7-5 advantage. 
  • Carthage put in goals from Bushroe-Stumpf, Hodges, and Machuca to end the third. 
  • Washington and Jefferson retaliated with four goals in the fourth to win 11-10. 
 
  • In the final game of the tournament, Carthage got the ball rolling, taking a 3-0 margin. 
  • Grove City changed the score to 4-3 with four goals. 
  • With 40 seconds left in the second, Sayatovic added another goal as Grove City held on to a slim lead. 
  • Grove City used a 4-1 run for a 9-5 score heading to the fourth. 
  • Carthage mounted a comeback as the Firebirds scored five goals coming from Bushroe-Stumpf and Machuca. 
  • Though a shot from Grace Steinberg found the back of the net with 43 seconds left, Grove City held on to win 13-11.
