KENOSHA, Wis. - In its first pair of games in Kenosha and against conference competition, Carthage excelled - sweeping the Pioneers in consecutive 4-1 wins. Carthage has now won three-consecutive games for the first time since April 11-12 of 2022.
Junior pitcher
Maddie Conway was sensational in the sweep, neutralizing Carroll for 11 innings across the two victories. Conway allowed only a single run - an unearned run early in game one.

Game One:
- Carthage struck first in game one, as first-year outfielder Gwen Hendrick singled in Gracie Vlach to put the Firebirds ahead 1-0.
- The Pios equalized in the top of the third inning as the Firebirds committed three errors in the field, allowing Carroll to send a runner home. The damage was limited only to one as Maddie Conway navigated around further trouble.
- Conway added a run of her own at the plate in the bottom half of the inning, singling in Gwen Hendrick.
- In the circle in the middle innings, Conway allowed an occasional base runner but was quick to dispel them. Carthage held on to a 2-1 lead with the sixth inning looming.
- The Firebirds put two runners on with two outs in the bottom of the sixth as Conway walked and Sarah Bennett reached on an error, setting up a prime opportunity for senior Rylee Johnson. With the wind blowing wildly, Johnson sent a ball into right center, scoring Bennett and Kiley Lamb. With the insurance runs added courtesy of Johnson, the Firebirds went ahead 4-1 with Conway headed back out to the circle to seal the deal.
- Conway made quick work of Carroll in the top of the seventh, helping lead the Firebirds to victory.
Game Two:
- Both pitchers worked around early trouble to keep the game knotted at zero heading into the bottom of the third.
- Carroll doubled off Emma Faubel with one out to take a 1-0 lead.
- Both teams struggled to convert offensively until Carthage found success with small ball in the top of the sixth. Carroll gifted Carthage two baserunners to start the inning as Kiley Lamb reached on a hit-by-pitch while Gwen Hendrick reached on an error. Izzy Hernandez moved both runners up a base with a well-placed bunt, setting Kristina Chronos up with a golden opportunity.
- With two runners in scoring position with just one out in the inning, Chronos singled over third base to score Lamb and tie the game at 1-1. The Firebirds were unable to score the runner on third, sending the game to the bottom half of the sixth.
- Maddie Conway worked around a pair of base runners in the bottom of the sixth inning while neither team generated any offense in the seventh, sending the contest into extra innings.
- Carthage hit five singles in the top of the eighth, sandwiched around a walk from Maddie Conway, to take its first lead of the afternoon. RBIs from Izzy Hernandez (one) and Rylee Johnson (two) gave the hosts a three-run lead.
- The Firebirds' ace allowed two singles in the bottom of the eighth but shut down Carroll with two outs, helping Carthage record its first sweep of the year.
- Gwen Hendrick and Maddie Conway each picked up multi-hit games and an RBI for Carthage in game one. Hendrick also scored a run in the win.
- In the circle, Maddie Conway was phenomenal. The ace went the distance in game one, striking out three and only allowing four hits and one run (unearned). Conway entered game two in relief, going four scoreless while allowing only four baserunners.
- Rylee Johnson recorded two hits and four RBIs in the sweep. Gracie Vlach also notched two hits and a run scored against the Pios.
- Kristina Chronos, Cynthia Ibarra, and Clare Rettler each tallied multiple hits in game two. Chronos scored a run and also delivered a key RBI single late in the contest, tying the game in the sixth inning.
- Kiley Lamb scored two runs in game two while also picking up a hit.
- The Firebirds take their three-game win streak on the road this week, taking on North Central in a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 4 beginning at 3 p.m. On Friday, Carthage heads to Rock Island for a doubleheader against Augustana (Ill.) with action set to start at 1 p.m.
