Firebirds Split First Day of Home Tournament

KENOSHA, Wis.  — The Carthage College women's water polo team split in competition on Saturday defeating Wittenberg 6-3 before falling to Macalester in the final match of the day 6-4. 

The Basics
Game One
  • Final score: Carthage 6, Wittenberg 3
  • Location: Kenosha, Wisconsin
  • Records: Carthage 4-11 (2-4 CWPA), Wittenberg 5-9 (1-4 CWPA)

  • Final score: Macalester 6 - Carthage 4 
  • Location: Kenosha, Wisconsin
  • Records: Macalester 5-9 (3-3 CWPA), Carthage 4-12 (2-5 CWPA)

How it Happened 
  • To start the game on Saturday, the Tigers put in two goals. 
  • Morrigan Bushroe-Stumpf got the Firebirds on the board in the third quarter with 3:30 left. 
  • Carthage closed the quarter with goals from Alyssa Sayatovic and Brenna Carstens, taking a 3-2 advantage to the fourth. 
  • Kaylin Machuca got in the score column, moving the Firebirds ahead 4-2. 
  • A pair of goals from Bushroe-Stumpf extended the advantage to six as Carthage went on to win 6-3. 
 
  • The Scots scored first in the second game of competition for Carthage on the day. 
  • The home team responded with two unanswered goals from Bushroe-Stumpf. 
  • Macalester put in two in the second until Grace Steinberg netted her first with 3:49 remaining. 
  • Following a goal in the third for Macalester, Sayatovic found the back of the net with 3:56 left. 
  • The Scots totaled two more goals in the fourth to win 6-4.
 
High Flyers
  • Morrigan Bushroe-Stumpf led the Firebirds in goals on the day with five. Bushroe-Stumpf currently has 19 goals on the season. 
  • In the cage, Ella Selman made 29 saves between two games for the Firebirds.
