Game Recap: Women's Water Polo |

Firebirds Start 2023 Campaign at Macalester; Defeat Caltech in Opening Match

ST. PAUL, Minn.  — The Carthage College women's water polo team started their season at the Macalester College Invitational as the Firebirds won their opening match over Caltech 12-10.

How it Happened 
 
  • In game one, Carthage started with a pair of goals from Alyssa Sayatovic and Morrigan Bushroe-Stumpf
  • Following Caltech getting on the board, Katlynn LaGrone pushed the lead to 3-1. 
  • Caltech scored with one second left in the first quarter shrinking the margin to 3-2. 
  • Another goal from LaGrone in the second put the lead back to two. 
  • The Beavers tallied four unanswered goals until another goal from Bushroe-Stumpf right before halftime, which tied it at six. 
  • In the third, Caltech scored before Yamila Areizaga responded, scoring with 59 seconds left. 
  • Two goals from Victoria Hodges and Grace Steinberg started the fourth quarter. 
  • After the Beavers scored, Carthage scored four-straight goals as the Firebirds went on to win 12-10. 
 
  • Game two saw Virginia Military Institute score six goals before Grace Steinberg got the Firebirds on the scoreboard. 
  • Areizaga added two goals for Carthage to end the first quarter.
  • The Keydets tallied five goals in the second and two in the third until Bushroe-Stumpf, Brenna Carstens, and LaGrone all had goals in the fourth. 
  • Virginia Military Institute won the game 21-6. 
 
  • To start Sunday action, Ottawa Arizona took a 7-0 margin into the second quarter. 
  • Areizaga and Sayatovic notched goals making it 7-2. 
  • The Spirit won the game 18-2. 
 
  • During the final game of the invite, Carthage tied it at one with a goal from LaGrone in the first. 
  • Augustana (Ill.) went ahead with four unanswered goals until two goals from Carstens and Steinberg made it 5-3. 
  • The Vikings scored five to close out the second quarter for a 10-3 score heading to the half. 
  • Carstens registered her second goal of the game, while Areizaga got in the score colum with 2:58 remaining in the third. 
  • Sarah Lowery got the Firebirds going in the fourth, then less than two minutes after, Areizaga scored. 
  • Augustana (Ill.) went on to win the game 17-7.
