DUNDEE, Ill. - The Carthage College Firebirds men's golf team took sixth place at the Carthage Fall Classic at Randall Oaks Golf Club in Dundee, Illinois this weekend. The host team was in sixth place following the first day of competition on Friday and stayed in that same position after another round of golf on Saturday afternoon.
- Result: Sixth place out of 20 total teams.
- Location: Randall Oaks Golf Club - Dundee, Illinois.
- Illinois Wesleyan - 554 (-14)
- Aurora University - 567 (-1)
- Hope College - 576 (+8)
- Millikin University - 583 (+15)
- Central College (IA) - 587 (+19)
- Carthage College - 600 (+32)
"That was an extremely impressive round by [Illinois] Wesleyan, and especially Quinn Clifford," said Carthage head men's golf coach
Jay Christiansen. "To shoot 14 under par as a team, and then add in there that Clifford shot 63, the new Wesleyan all-time school record, is simply fantastic golf. Randall Oaks is a tough layout, and they always give our tournament tough pins because they know it is a premier midwest D3 field and they want to challenge us. Wow, just really, really good."
"We showed up very well too. A two-day total of 600 and finishing 6th out of 20 quality teams, with such a young squad and on Randall Oaks, is a strong performance. Last year, with our senior-laden lineup, we shot 609 and finished in 10th. These young guys started improving last year as they were getting tutored by their older teammates, and they have kept that improvement going and are trying to set the bar even higher. I guess we shall see if they can work hard enough and stay focused enough to take another step yet this fall."
- The Firebirds will partake in the WLC Invitational at the Washington County Golf Course in Hartford, Wisconsin on Saturday, September 17 and Sunday, September 18. The start times for both days of competition are to be announced.
