Men’s Golf Ties for Fifth at Augustana Invitational

4/9/2022 10:30:00 PM

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — The Carthage men's golf team tied for fifth place alongside Bethel University (MN) this Saturday afternoon to conclude the Augustana College Spring Invitational. The Firebirds shot 304 on day one, and 297 this evening to combine for 601 on the par 72, 6777 Highland Springs Golf Course.

Senior Kevin Healy led the way for the Firebirds, finishing in a second-place tie among the 138 golfers in attendance. Healy carded a 76 (+4) for round one and a second-round low 66 (-6) today to finish 144 (-2) for the tournament. Healy's second round 66 is the fourth lowest single round score in program history, tieing Donnie Langland's score from the Aurora Fall Invitational in 2012.

Fellow senior Tyler Muschewske finished in a ninth-place tie, shooting mutual 74 (+2)'s in both rounds to card 148 (+4). Alex Green finished with 155 (+7), while Austin Young trailed one stroke behind with 156 (+8). Keegan Oberding chipped in 164 (+20) to round out the team's scorecard. Freshman Colton Sigel shot 168 (+24) as he competed individually.

Head Coach Jay Christiansen:

"Playing in a strong, 25 team event without a couple of our top five, to shoot a two total of 601, and come in 5th, is a true testament to both our depth and how hard we have been working. We have outstanding senior leadership, and those seniors led the way once again.

Kevin's second day round of 6 under par 66, one stroke off the all-time Carthage record, was flat out fantastic. Today that course was soggy, there was a strong cold breeze, and he goes out and shoots his best college round like it was a calm 80 degree July day. He was splitting fairways off the tee, he was sticking his irons tight, and his putting showed a confidence that grew with each of his seven birdies.

You don't see many 6 under rounds in college golf, and honestly, it could easily have been 8 or 9 under. Coaches stress to athletes to focus on small improvements, and if one works and works and works on those little things, eventually it will show up on the scoreboard or the scorecard. Today all of Kevin's work on the little things showed up on the scorecard."

Webster College finished in first among the 25-team field, carding a two day score of 584. Wisconsin Eau-Claire trailed in second with 592 and Illinois Wesleyan finished third with 597.

The Firebirds are set to compete next in the CCIW Preview next Wednesday, April 13th at the Dretzka Park Golf Course in Milwaukee, Wis.
