Firebirds and Pioneers Split Thursday’s CCIW Doubleheader

WAUKESHA, Wis. — The Carthage College softball team defeated Carroll (Wis.) in game one 3-1 before falling in the second game 11-3 on Thursday at Kilgour Field. 

Out of the gate, the Firebirds (14-14, 8-6 CCIW) got on the board first as a passed ball allowed Bella Spittler to score. In the third inning, the Pioneers (19-13, 11-5 CCIW) tied it with an RBI single to left field however, in the fourth, an RBI groundout from Abby Wierzbicki was deep enough to score Naomi Alonzo giving Carthage back the lead 2-1. The Firebirds added to their lead in the sixth with an RBI single from Alonzo as two flyouts and a groundout won the game for Carthage 3-1. 

In game two, Carroll (Wis.) jumped ahead in the first with an RBI double then scored three in the second. Kristina Chronos got Carthage going in the bottom of the second with an RBI double to right field. The Pioneers added two in the third and three in the fourth moving the score to 8-1. Carroll (Wis.) tacked on three runs in the fifth until an RBI double from Alonzo cut the deficit to nine. Maddie Conway drove in Alonzo with an RBI single to right field making it 11-3. Though the Firebirds had runners on base, a groundout sealed the victory for Carroll (Wis.). 

Carthage returns to the diamond on Monday, May 2 playing No. 23 Millikin starting at 2 p.m. 
 

Quick Facts

  • In game one, Naomi Alonzo led the team in hits with three and one run batted in. 
  • Kristina Chronos led the Firebirds in hits in game two with two and one RBI. Chronos also had two doubles in the contest. 
  • Maddie Conway and Alonzo each drove in one run in game two.
