NORMAL, Ill. — The Carthage men's golf team finished in eighth place this Saturday afternoon at Illinois Wesleyan's Spring Invitational, which featured 25 teams on the par-72 Ironwood Golf Course.

The Firebirds shot 312 this afternoon and 614 collectively over the two day tournament, led today by senior Kevin Healy's 73 (+1). Illinois Wesleyan (A) took first place, shooting 582 for the event due to their record-setting low first round.

Healy carded a 76 (+4) in round one to total 149 strokes and lead the Firebird scorecard with his 11th-place finish. Following closely behind was fellow senior Tyler Muschewske, who carded 73 (+1), and 78 (+6) today to tie for 14th.

Zachary Shawhan shot 155 (+11) for the tourney, while freshman Alex Lilly and senior Alex Green (Indiv.) both finished with 159 strokes over their two rounds. Freshman Tanner Angelstad rounded out the Firebird scorecard with 165 (+21).

"It was a challenging couple of days, playing in cold, windy, wet weather that made the course extra tough and emphasized mental toughness. Those are 5 1/2 hour rounds, in that weather, so it really puts a premium on staying positive, and in the golfer's mind, feeling proud about making pars.

In our first competition in 10 days, since our week in Dallas, I thought we represented ourselves very well. If you look at the gap between us in 8th, and the tie for second between Aurora and Webster, it was only 10 strokes. If a couple guys find a few more putts to go in each day, we are in a much more impressive spot in an excellent tournament. 

On Friday, senior Tyler Muschewske seemed comfortable and confident all day, and really put together a very solid round of 73. Senior Kevin Healy, not to be outdone, fires his own 73 in even tougher conditions on Saturday, and showed this is a lineup with some true depth. We have all been working our butts off for this spring season, and I really like the way we are trending."

Carthage's junior varsity team will compete at Elmhurst this coming Thursday, April 7th before the Varsity team tees off at the Augustana Invitational on April 8th and 9th at the Highland Springs Course in Rock Island, Ill.
