Firebirds Take Two Over Elmhurst in Home Conference Opener

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage College softball team started conference play sweeping Elmhurst 4-1 in game one and 7-4 in game two in their home opener of the season on Monday.

Bella Spittler got on the home team on the board first in game one crossing home plate on a passed ball. Carthage (7-7, 2-0 CCIW) doubled their lead in the second with an RBI double from Alaina Azar. An RBI single in the fourth from Azar moved the score to 3-0. Later, Naomi Alonzo doubled to right center scoring Rylee Johnson. Though Elmhurst (6-15, 0-6 CCIW) tallied a run in the sixth, a flyout, pop out and a closing strikeout gave Carthage the game one win.

In game two, the Firebirds took control of the game in the first with a single from Izzy Hernandez. The Bluejays responded in the bottom half tying it at one. In the third, a bases-loaded walk put Carthage back ahead 2-1. The Firebirds scored four in the fifth off an RBI single from Azar, an RBI double from Kiley Lamb, and a two-run single from Alonzo. After Elmhurst scored two in the fifth, Maddie Conway hit a double that hit the fence allowing Johnson to score. Following an RBI triple for the Bluejays, the Firebirds shut the door on any comeback with a foul out, and two popups for the 7-4 win.

The Firebirds are back on the diamond tomorrow facing North Central (Ill.) in doubleheader action. Game one is set for a 3 p.m. start time.
