SPRINGFIELD, Ohio. — The Carthage College women's water polo team wrapped up their Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA)-West Region trip to Ohio on Sunday.
After falling to No. 5 Austin 19-3 on Saturday, the Firebirds got on the board first in the second game against Wittenberg as
Alyssa Sayatovic scored at the 7:16 mark of the first. The Tigers retaliated, scoring three unanswered goals heading to the second.
Sophie Flott and Sayatovic registered goals in the second, tying the game at three heading into halftime.
In the third quarter, Wittenberg scored four goals, then
Taylor Woitesek registered her first goal of the day, shrinking the deficit to three at 7-4. The home team found the back of the net with 1:37 remaining as Wittenberg headed to the last quarter of play with an 8-4 margin.
Katlynn LaGrone scored first for the Firebirds in the fourth, narrowing the gap to three. Though the Firebirds held Wittenberg scoreless for most of the quarter, a goal for Wittenberg gave them the victory 9-5.
The Firebirds continue CWPA play traveling to Augustana (Ill.) on Saturday, April 2 at 3 p.m.
