Firebirds Excel at CCIW Tournament No. 1

BETTENDORF, Iowa. - The Carthage Firebirds women's bowling team knocked down 6,035 pins en route to a first-place finish at the first conference event of the 2022-2023 schedule. Carthage finished third at the event in total pinfall, trailing Aurora and Marian (Wis.), but wiped out the most pins during day two's traditional matches to lead the pack. 


The Basics
 
  • Result: First out of eight teams. 
  • Location: TBK High 5 Lanes - Bettendorf, Iowa. 

How it Happened

  
Day One:
  • Carthage swept its competition on day one, which consisted of four baker matches. 
  • In the first match of the day, Carthage got the best of Aurora by a narrow 17-pin margin. The final score was 838-821. 
  • The Firebirds took care of Carroll in match two, winning 756-658. 
  • In an absolute nail biter, the Firebirds escaped with a one-pin win over North Central, winning 848-847. 
  • To complete a perfect day, Carthage ran away from Elmhurst with a 828-682 victory. 
Day Two: 
  • Day two consisted of three traditional matches, and Carthage won two out of three to wrap up an excellent tournament. 
  • Marian (Wis.) got the best of the Firebirds in match one, winning 988-910. 
  • Carthage overcame Augustana (Ill.) to win by 15 pins in match two, taking the match by a score of 860-845. 
  • The Firebirds created their highest pinfall in their final match of the tournament, taking down Illinois Wesleyan 995-716.

High Flyers
 
  • Caitlin Powers led the Firebirds in pinfall during their three traditional matches, knocking down 620 pins. Powers is fresh off of a CCIW Women's Bowling Student-Athlete of the Week honor. 
  • Junior Cassie Hyland knocked down 606 pins for Carthage on day two. 

Up Next
 
  • Carthage will take two weeks off before heading to Addison, Illinois for the Warhawk Open. The open will take place on Saturday, December 3 and Sunday, December 4.
