Firebirds Offense Sinks Elmhurst in CCIW Doubleheader

ELMHURST, Ill. — Playing their final regular-season doubleheader, the Carthage College softball team swept Elmhurst in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) action winning the first game 14-4 and 13-5 in game two on Sunday afternoon at Salt Creek Park.

Following a double from Donna Stevens, Rylee Johnson drove home Stevens with an RBI single as Carthage (18-16, 16-14 CCIW) started with a quick 1-0 lead in game one. The Firebirds blew the game open with a seven-run second sparked by a two-RBI single from Johnson. Elmhurst (9-20, 7-16 CCIW) retaliated with three in the third until the Firebirds added two in the fourth as Katie Trail scored on a wild pitch changing the score to 10-3. Back-to-back doubles from Kirby Peters and Stefanie Guercio extended the lead to 10 as Carthage won 14-4.

In game two, after the Firebirds scored three sparked by a three-run triple by Reagan Goluch in the opening inning, the Bluejays took the lead with five runs but an RBI single from Izzy Hernandez shrank the deficit to one at 5-4 in the third. Later, a single from Aliana Azar allowed Angie Stepanski to score, tying it at five. Back-to-back walks gave the Firebirds control of the game 7-5 as Carthage used a six-run fourth to go on to win 13-5.
