NORMAL, IL. — Men's Golf ended their season this Saturday with a third-place finish among the nine conference teams in competition at the Men's Golf CCIW Championship. The Firebirds combined for a three-day total of 922 (+70), after shooting 314 (+70) in the final round of play. Illinois Wesleyan placed first with their score of 894 (+42), while Millikin took second with a total of 920 (+68).

Junior Zachary Shawhan became the 12th Carthage men's golf player in the program's history to win the CCIW Men's Golf Individual Championship. Shawhan combined for a tournament best 219 (+6) to give him his first individual win of the season. After shooting 71 and 74 for a day one total of 145 (+3), Shawhan pulled in 74 (+3) for the final day of play, putting him five strokes ahead of the second-place slot. Zach is the Firebird's newest conference medalist since Matt Meneghetti won the title back in the 2017-2018 Spring season.

"Zach had an amazing tournament from start to finish," said Head Coach Brandy Johnston. "He kept his cool through the ups and downs of his round today and it was just really fun to watch. Zach has been in the position to win a couple of times this year and came up short, but I think he put those experiences to good use today! I'm just really happy and excited for him. His hard work paid off!"

Tyler Muschewske also led the way for the Firebirds with a 10th-place tie as he combined for 232 (+19) over the three days of play. Muschewske shot 77 in round one, 78 in round two, and 77 (+6) in the final round of the tournament. A top-10 finish in the CCIW Championship grants both Muschewske and Shawhan all-conference honors for the year.

Alex Green also made a strong impact for Carthage with his 12th-place tie after he shot 233 (+20) for the tournament. Green shot a 78 and 74 in the first day of play, and would finish the event with a third-round score of 81 (+10). Fifth on the scorecard for Carthage, Austin Young placed 23rd with his total of 242 (+29), while Kevin Healy closed things out for the Firebirds by shooting 246 (+33) for a 25th-place tie.

"I was really proud of the fight in us today. We were twelve strokes back of second place heading into today's round and nearly pulled off a comeback in really tough conditions. This was a great learning experience for us. Everyone will be back next year and if they work as hard between now and next season as they have over this past season, I think there are good things ahead for this group."
