Firebirds Split CCIW Doubleheader at North Central

NAPERVILLE, Ill. — The Carthage College softball team continued the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) competition with a split against North Central falling in game one 4-0 before winning game two 11-3 on Tuesday at Shanover Family Field. 

After North Central (8-10, 6-8 CCIW) took game one 4-0 and got on the board first in game two, Carthage (10-6, 8-4 CCIW) responded with a four-run second inning sparked by a two-run RBI double from Izzy Hernandez flipping the score to 4-1. The Cardinals added a lone run in the third making it 4-2 until the Firebirds broke the game open with a five-run fourth inning sparked by a two-run home run by Hernandez. Though North Central added another run in the fifth, an RBI single from Naomi Alonzo sealed the victory for Carthage 11-3. 

Next up, Carthage returns to the diamond on Thursday, April 15 playing Illinois Wesleyan on the road at 3 p.m. 

Quick Facts

  • Bella Spittler registered another stolen base in game one while Rylee Johnson had a double in the opening game. 
  • Izzy Hernandez led Carthage in runs batted in with four off two hits in game two along with collecting her second home run of the season. 
  • Donna Stevens scored three runs while Spittler had two runs batted in the second game.
  • Ellie Bernero struck out three batters and only allowed one run in the circle for game two.
