Women’s Swim and Dive Beats Wheaton in Dual Meet

WHEATON, Ill. — The Carthage College women's swimming and diving won their first conference dual meet of the season over Wheaton (Ill.) 217-106 on Friday and Saturday.

The Firebirds finished in the top three in multiple events during the two-day meet as Allison Vassilakos took first in three races: 500-yard freestyle (5:14.56), 100-yard butterfly (1:01.25), and 1000-yard freestyle (11:06.69). Senior Jordyn Bloode also had three race wins as she won the 200-yard individual medley (2:14.26), 200-yard freestyle (1:59.41), and 200-yard backstroke (2:12.52). 

Sophomore Ashleigh Espinoza won the 200-yard breaststroke while freshman Grace Norman took second in the 200-yard individual medley. Freshman Maria Gutzweiler recorded third in the 50-yard freestyle and won the 100-yard backstroke event. Classmate Sydney Logan put in a third-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:36.68. 

Gutzweiler and Espinoza went second and third respectively in the 100-yard individual medley while Signe Hauck added a second-place time of 56.75 in the 100-yard freestyle. 

Freshman Abigail Barnes tallied second in the 100-yard backstroke (1:05.04) while Izzy Bertaud won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.78. Bertaud also registered third in the 100-yard freestyle and Mary Gargano-Price collected second in the 200-yard breaststroke. 

Gargano-Price and Espinoza went second and third in the 100-yard individual medley while Norman and junior Jordyn Kaplan finished second and third in the 100-yard breaststroke. Sophomore Alyssa Sayatovic clocked a time of 2:39.93 in the 200-yard breaststroke for third. 

In diving events, freshman Kaycee Siears and sophomore Patricia Banasik took the top two spots in both the one-meter and three-meter competitions. 

During the relay events, Bloode, Norman, Vassilakos, and Logan won the 400-yard medley relay as the team of Gutzweiler, Kaplan, Elise Merucci and Espinoza tallied second in the event. 

Gutzweiler, Norman, Vassilakos, and Bertaud registered second in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:53.35. 

The Firebirds will race in the Carthage Classic Invitational starting on Thursday, December 2 at 4:30 p.m.
