Firebirds Defeat Wheaton in Two-Day Dual Meet

WHEATON, Ill. — The Carthage College men's swimming and diving team defeated Wheaton (Ill.) 163-160 in a two-day dual meet on Friday and Saturday. 

The Firebirds finished in the top three in several individual events between the two days as Conner Hwang clocked a first-place time of 1:58.62 in the 200-yard butterfly and placed second in the 100-yard butterfly. Hwang registered a time of 1:58.82 in the 200-yard individual medley. Mitchell Mages took first in the 500-yard freestyle (4:57.59) and second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.02). 

Sophomore Michael Bartczyszyn placed third in the 500-yard freestyle while freshman Jacob Hardt added a second-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Senior Adam Moskus won three events during the meet, winning the 50-yard freestyle (21.33), 100-yard individual medley (55.31), and 100-yard freestyle (47.45).

Freshman Ben Keller clocked times of 55.39 and 2:03.99 in the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke events, respectively. Classmate Paul Busse took first in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:23.27) and third in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:19.38), while junior Lucas Rognrud recorded third in the 100-yard backstroke (58.36). 

In diving events, Sam Wallace, Manny Contreras, and Daniel Staicu went one, two, and three in the one-meter while Staicu won the three-meter event. 

During the relay portion of the meet, the Firebirds took second in two events as Hwang, Case Stevenson, Mages, and Moskus tallied second in the 400-yard medley. Mages, Moskus Keller and Hardt collected second in the 200-yard medley. 

The team of Mages, Moskus, Bartczyszyn, and Hwang won the 400-yard freestyle clocking a time of 3:10.57. 

Carthage returns to the pool on Thursday, December 2 the start of the Carthage Classic Invitational. Day one will begin at 4:30 p.m.
