1/23/2021 6:24:00 PM

MEQUON, Wis. — In the first season of the new era of Carthage men's wrestling, the team picked up their first win at the CUW Duals on Saturday, defeating Lakeland 21-18 while falling to Concordia Wisconsin, MSOE, and Wheaton.

"We wrestled tough today," said head coach Alberto Quiros. "We have many things we need to improve upon, but I thought that everyone who wrestled today did so with heart. That is a lot to look up to, and I'm proud of this team today."

Carthage opened up with a 52-4 loss to the host school Concordia, with Collin Ruiz winning his match to score four. In their second contest of the day against Lakeland, River Rogers won 6-0 in his 141-pound matchup, with Alex Hoffman adding six as well in the 197 weight class. Colin Tedford picked up six by forfeit, while Devin Rogers added three.

Carthage would drop their final two matchups of the day, falling to MSOE 41-6, and Wheaton 53-0.

The program was back in action for Carthage for the first time since 1994, after becoming a varsity sport during the 1961-62 season.

The Carthage men's wrestling team will compete next on Saturday, January 30 at the North Central Duals.
