Playoff Run Ends For Lady Reds in Game Three of NCAA Super Regional

BLOOMINGTON, ILL.—With a 1-0 series advantage in the best-of-three NCAA Division III Super Regional against Illinois Wesleyan, the balls were in the Lady Reds' court heading into Saturday's portion of the event at the Illinois Wesleyan Softball Field. Stefanie Guercio allowed just six hits, one run and struckout six batters in the pitching circle for Carthage in game two, but didn't receive the same offensive support as the previous four NCAA Tournament games as they dropped a 1-0 decision to the Titans. The Lady Reds found themselves on the wrong end of a 4-1 score in game three, which resulted in a 124-minute rain delay in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Illinois Wesleyan will advance to their fourth-straight NCAA Division III Softball World Series with a 38-8 record, while the Lady Reds end their 2019 season with a 30-16 overall record.

The 2019 Lady Reds reached the 30-win plateau for just the third time in program history, and outscored opponents 17-6 in the 2019 NCAA Tournament. Carthage now owns an 11-10 all-time record in the NCAA Tournament after reaching the super regional for the first time in program history.

Saturday's contests marked senior Alexandra Millett's final time in a Lady Reds uniform.

Illinois Wesleyan 1, Lady Reds 0

The game's lone run occurred in the second inning, where Brittany Murphy executed a bunt single and advanced to second base off Colleen Palczynski's sacrifice bunt. This set up Hayley Earl's double that scored Murphy from second base en route to a 1-0 Illinois Wesleyan lead.

The Lady Reds notched three hits off Titans pitcher Ally Wiegand in the contest, while Guercio struckout out six batters and allowed six hits in the complete-game pitching loss for Carthage.

Illinois Wesleyan 4, Lady Reds 1

The Titans and Lady Reds traded first-inning runs, thanks to Donna Stevens' double that plated Brooke Byas (Millett's pinch runner, who singled) to even the score at 1-1.

Carthage mustered just one more hit the remainder of the contest, which was halted in the fourth inning due to rain. The Titans tallied a pair of second-inning runs, and one more in the sixth to secure a 4-1 victory.

Lady Reds pitchers Ellie Bernero and Guercio combined to give up 11 hits and strikeout three batters. Ally Wiegand relieved Brea Walker in the pitching circle after the rain delay, where she finished the contest with three strikeouts while allowing no hits. Jillian Runyon, Sam Berghoff, Shelby Funk and Brittany Murphy each notched a pair of hits for IWU.
