Lady Reds Open CWPA Tournament With 9-3 Win Over Utica, and Huge 9-6 Upset of Grove City College

NEW LONDON, CONN.—The #7 seed Carthage College water polo team competed on the opening day of the 2019 Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III Championship at the Lott Natatorium in New London, Connecticut on Friday, home of Connecticut College. The Lady Reds avoided the losers bracket with a 9-3 victory over #10 seed Utica College in the first game, which secured them a date with Grove City College later in the day. Carthage put the finishing touches on their stellar day with a huge 9-6 upset victory over #2 seed Grove City College.
 
The Lady Reds advance to the 2019 CWPA Division III Semifinal against #3 seed Austin College on Saturday, April 13 at 2:15 p.m. (ET). A victory will send Carthage to the 2019 CWPA Championship Game on Sunday.
 
Carthage exits Friday with a 4-13 overall record.

Emma Jeronimus was the story for Carthage, as she held Utica to just three goals and made 11 saves. Her support began with Maddi Marsh's career-high four goals, while Meghan Fisher recorded a hat trick. Sophie Flott tacked on a pair of goals to the Lady Reds offense.
 
The Lady Reds finished the day 2-for-4 on sprints, and 1-for-3 on advantage opportunities.
 
Michalyn Winkler notched 21 saves in net for Utica.

Jeronimus was nothing short of sensational as she notched 15 saves in net for the Lady Reds. Meghan Fisher registered four goals for the Lady Reds while Marsh continued her stellar season with two more. Heather Walker, Sophie Flott and Morgan Fingerson each notched a goal for Carthage's offense.
 
The Lady Reds finished the contest 2-for-4 in sprints.
 
The Lady Reds took a commanding 7-3 lead into the fourth quarter, where Grove City outscored Carthage 3-2 to make the score final at 9-6. Alexa Dunn tallied four saves in net for Grove City College.
