Lady Reds Secure Third Place at 2018 CWPA Championship With 11-6 Victory Over Presidents

ERIE, PA.—The Carthage College water polo team faced Washington & Jefferson College in the 2018 Collegiate Water Polo Association Third Place Game at the Hallman Aquatics Center in Erie, Pa. on Sunday. Mae Van Beest's three goals, eight steals and three assists propelled the Lady Reds to an 11-6 victory over the Presidents en route to third place in the CWPA for the fifth-straight season. Van Beest concluded the 2018 season with a perfect 12-for-12 on swim-offs.
 
Carthage ends the 2018 season 7-11, 3-4 CWPA while Washington & Jefferson wraps their campaign with a 5-13 record.

Morgan Fingerson set the tone with a power-play goal from the top of the key at the 3:18 mark of the first quarter to give Carthage a 1-0 advantage. The Presidents responded with two goals en route to a 2-1 lead with 6:01 left in the second quarter before Carthage responded with a 7-1 run. Van Beest contributed three goals in the run to propel the Lady Reds to an 8-3 lead after the third quarter.
 
Lexie Gartner narrowed Washington & Jefferson's deficit to 8-4 with her third goal of the game with 6:31 left in the fourth quarter before Carthage strung together three goals. Jessica Graziano, Allie Boothe and Morgan Levy each notched goals in the run to push the Lady Reds' lead to 11-4 with 4:23 left in the fourth quarter.
 
The Presidents tallied two goals within the final four minutes, but ran out of time as Carthage held onto an 11-6 victory.
 
Graziano and Mack Ryan each notched a pair of goals for the Lady Reds while Levy, Boothe, Fingerson and Arianna Dakuras each contributed one. Carthage goalie Emma Jeronimus finished the game with 14 saves and two steals.
 
The Lady Reds bid farewell to seniors Elyssa Hawkins, Morgan Levy, Allie Boothe and Mack Ryan.
