Lady Reds Cap Spring Trip With Victories Over Northwestern and Emmanuel

CLERMONT, FLA.—The Carthage College softball team concluded their 12-game Florida trip against University of Northwestern (MN.) and Emmanuel College on Friday in Clermont. After a 2-6 start to the trip, the Lady Reds completed a 4-0 finish with a 6-1 victory over University of Northwestern (MN.), and a 1-0 shutout win over Emmanuel.

The victories send Carthage's record to 6-6, 0-0 CCIW. Northwestern's loss sent their record to 3-3 while Emmanuel fell to 5-4.

Lady Reds 6, Northwestern 1

The Lady Reds pounded Northwestern for 10 hits in the contest. Emmily Zinkiewicz and Naomi Alonzo led the charge with two hits each, while six other Lady Reds contributed one. RBI-singles from Zinkiewicz and Juarez in the second inning pushed Carthage's lead to 2-0. Madison Ganir's third-inning RBI-single scored Danielle Koziczkowski to push the lead to 3-0. Koziczkowski later touched home plate when Ellie Bernero reached on a fielder's choice to make the score 4-0.

Marissa Maldonado's one-run single, and Jennifer Michuda's RBI-groundout in the fourth inning made the score 6-0 for Lady Reds pitcher Alonzo, who was flawless over the opening 4 2/3 innings as a perfect game was intact. That went by the wayside with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning when Northwestern's Kayla Hannasch singled. She eventually scored off Courtney Schmidt's single to cut the Eagles' deficit to 6-1.

Alonzo notched 10 strikeouts, allowed one run (none earned), and three hits in a complete-game victory.

Lady Reds 1, Emmanuel 0

Solid pitching continued to be the remedy for Carthage as Stefanie Guercio notched nine strikeouts and allowed just one hit in her second complete-game shutout. That lone hit occurred in the fourth inning off Audrey Esakoff's single.

Guercio's run support occurred in the second inning when Brooke Sefcik's solo-home run made the score 1-0. Sefick and Michuda each contributed two hits for a Carthage offense that accumulated seven for the game.

The Lady Reds will return to action on Wednesday, March 21 at St. Norbert College (DH). The double-dip is set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
