Mae Van Beest's Two Goals Not Enough in 11-5 Loss to Macalester

2/25/2018 12:21:00 PM

KENOSHA, WIS.—The Carthage College women's water polo team wrapped up the two-day Carthage College Tournament at the Koenitzer Aquatic Center on Sunday morning. Macalester's 6-0 cushion with 3:39 left in the second quarter was too much to overcome for Carthage as they dropped an 11-5 decision. Freshman Mae Van Beest paced all Lady Reds in the contest with a pair of goals. Arianna Dakuras, Mack Ryan and Jessica Graziano each contributed goals for the Carthage offense while Emma Jeronimus clocked-in 14 saves for the complete-game loss in net.

The loss drops Carthage's record to 2-6, 0-0 CWPA while the Scots stay undefeated at 3-0, 0-0 CWPA.

Lady Reds 5, Macalester 11 (Box Score)

The Scots opened the contest with a 6-0 run capped by Cara Mullery's goal on the breakaway with 3:39 left in the second quarter. Mack Ryan put an end to that run when she received a pool-length pass from Jeronimus in front of the Macalester net, where she put a shot past Scots' goalkeeper Courtney Overland with 0:02 left on the clock to make the score 6-1 at halftime.

Macalester widened their lead to 8-1 with 7:00 left in the third before Carthage answered the bell. Jessica Graziano, who was on Overland's right, took a feed from Elyssa Hawkins and finished with a goal to narrow the score to 8-2 with 3:51 left in the third.

The Scots widened their advantage to 9-2 after the third quarter. Carthage outscored Macalester 3-2 in the fourth thanks to Mae Van Beest's two goals down the stretch, as well as Arianna Dakuras' goal. The late-game success wasn't enough as Carthage settled for an 11-5 loss.

The Lady Reds will return to action on Friday, March 9 – Sunday, March 11 at the 2018 CWPA Tournament I at the Lott Natatorium in New London, Conn.
