Lady Reds Resume Season Against Matadors, Regals and Athenas

KENOSHA, WIS.—After a three-month hiatus from competition, the Carthage College women's water polo team will resume their 2017-18 season on Friday, February 2 at the Samuelson Aquatic Center, located on the campus of California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, Calif. The Lady Reds will begin the day with a bout against NCAA Division I #19 California State University Northridge at 9:00 a.m. (PT) before they wrap the day against California Lutheran University at 1:00 p.m. (PT). Carthage will conclude their California stay on Saturday, February 3, when they travel to Claremont McKenna College for a 1:00-p.m. (PT) affair.
 
The Lady Reds opened their season at the Indiana Hoosier Showcase in Naperville, Ill. on November 4, where they registered a 13-8 loss to University of Toronto, and an 11-8 win over Lindenwood University.
 
ABOUT #19 CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY NORTHRIDGE (2-2, 0-0 BIG WEST)
 
The Matadors, a member of the Big West Conference, opened their 2018 season with a 2-2 showing at the University of California Santa Barbara Winter Invite on January 19-20. This included a 9-7 victory over #25 California Baptist on January 19, and a 14-5 loss to #5 University of Michigan on January 20.
 
Shannon Hovanesian paces CSUN in scoring with five goals and eight assists for 13 points this season. Niki Van Vugt (8.50 GAA) and Emma Pfister (10.00 GAA) each own a pair of starts in net for the Matadors.
 
The Lady Reds will square-off against California State University Northridge for the first time ever.
 
ABOUT CALIFORNIA LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY (0-0, 0-0 SCIAC)
 
The Regals are coming off a 15-13, 6-5 SCIAC campaign in 2017, which ended with a 9-7 loss to University of La Verne in the SCIAC Championship Game. Cal Lutheran's 2018 roster consists of 23 athletes, which includes only three seniors. Five freshmen are entrenched on the 2017-18 Cal Lutheran roster.
 
Carthage is 0-4 all-time against Cal Lutheran.
 
ABOUT CLAREMONT MCKENNA COLLEGE (0-2, 0-0 SCIAC)
 
The Athenas opened their 2018 season with an 11-5 loss to Loyola Marymount, followed by another 11-5 loss to Azusa Pacific on January 27. The 2017 season saw Claremont McKenna finish 11-20, 5-6 SCIAC, which concluded in a 13-11 victory over Chapman University in the SCIAC Fifth Place Game.
 
The Lady Reds are 0-2 all-time against Claremont-McKenna College. The Athenas registered a 13-0 victory over Carthage in the previous meeting on March 14, 2009.
 
WHAT'S NEXT
 
The Carthage College Tournament will take place on Saturday, February 24 – Sunday, February 25 at the Koenitzer Aquatic Center in Kenosha, Wis. The Lady Reds will welcome McKendree, Monmouth and Macalester to the four-team tournament.
