Lady Reds End Regular Season With Split Against Concordia Chicago

KENOSHA, WIS.—The Carthage College softball team hosted Concordia University Chicago (DH) in their final regular season bout of the 2017 season on Wednesday afternoon. The Lady Reds ended things with a 5-1 win, and 9-6 loss to the Cougars.

Wednesday's doubleheader marked the final home games for seniors Darian Pelsor, Katie Herron, Kayla Uhwat-Vicicondi and Kristine Herdegen.

Carthage concludes their 2017 regular season with a 24-16, 12-4 CCIW mark while the Cougars sit at 22-14, 11-7 NACC.

The #2 Lady Reds will learn their first opponent of the four-team, double elimination CCIW Tournament following Saturday's slate of conference games.

Lady Reds 5, Concordia Chicago 1

Carthage pitcher Katie Herron surrendered one run on two hits while striking out seven batters in a complete-game effort. Herron's no-hit bid ended in the fifth inning when Michele Alexander registered an infield single.  Her run support began in the first inning when Kristine Herdegen's single drove in Kayla Uhwat-Vicicondi, who doubled, to make the score 1-0.

Uhwat led off the third inning with a single before she moved to second base off Vivian Juarez's sacrifice bunt, and to third when Herdegen reached on an error. She touched home plate off Darian Pelsor's fielder's choice to widen Carthage's lead to 2-0.

The Lady Reds collected three runs in the fourth inning en route to a 5-0 lead. Juarez's RBI double, and Herdegen's two-run single highlighted Carthage's three-run fourth inning.

Carthage's lone blemish occurred when Melissa Balkema hit a sixth-inning solo home run to make the score 5-1.

Uhwat and Herdegen each registered two hits for the Lady Reds' offense.

Concordia Chicago 9, Lady Reds 6

The Cougars registered a 1-0 lead in the second inning before Carthage responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Uhwat began the charge with a two-run single that plated Alessia Knowski (walk) and Shannon Walsh (single) to give the Lady Reds a 2-1 lead. Vivian Juarez followed when she reached base off a hit by pitch. Pelsor plated Juarez and Uhwat on a two-run single to widen Carthage's lead to 4-1.

The Cougars responded with three runs in the fifth inning to knot the game 4-4. Pelsor and Marissa Maldonado reached base in the bottom of the fifth inning on a double and error respectively, which set up Lauren Jones' two-run single to give Carthage a 6-4 lead.

The Lady Reds couldn't build that lead as Alexander's three-run home run highlighted a five-run Concordia Chicago sixth inning, which gave them a 9-6 lead.

Amy Goldsmith and Allie Wesel each saw action on the pitching rubber for Carthage. Walsh and Pelsor each notched a pair of hits for the Carthage offense.

The #2 Lady Reds will return to action at the CCIW Softball Tournament, to be held at the Workman Family Softball Complex in Decatur, Ill. The four-team field will be determined following Saturday's CCIW games.
