Lady Reds Push Win Streak to Seven With Sweep of Wheaton

 


KENOSHA, WIS.—The Carthage College softball team hosted Wheaton College (DH) on Tuesday afternoon. Katie Herron's complete-game three hitter coupled with 15 Lady Reds hits propelled the squad to an 11-1 victory (5 Innings) in game one. Carthage pounded 10 more hits in game two to secure a 10-0 win. Amy Goldsmith, who went the distance on the pitching rubber in game two, surrendered four hits and struck out five batters.
 
The victories push Carthage's record to 16-8, 7-1 CCIW, while the Thunder fall to 5-21, 1-5 CCIW. Tuesday's sweep also extends the Lady Reds' win streak to seven games.
 
Lady Reds 11, Wheaton College 1 (Five Innings)
 
The Lady Reds batted around in a six-run second inning. Lauren Jones, who reached on an error, tacked on Carthage's first run when she advanced to second base on Ellie Bernero's single before she scored off Emmily Zinkiewicz's base hit to make the score 1-0.
 
Bernero and Zinkiewicz cleared the bases off Kayla Uhwat-Vicicondi's two-run double to widen the Lady Reds' lead to 3-0. Uhwat touched home plate off Vivian Juarez's single to extend the margin to 4-0. Kristine Herdegen and Brooke Sefcik each tallied RBI singles to push the score to 6-0. Juarez and Herdegen each scored off those base hits.
 
The Thunder tacked their lone run in the third inning before Carthage registered five unanswered runs. Four of those runs occurred in the third inning, where Zinkiewicz led off with a single.  Juarez knocked in Zinkiewicz with a single to right field to make the score 7-1.
 
Herdegen and Pelsor followed with a single a piece to load the bases for Sefcik, who drove in Juarez on a sacrifice fly to make the score 8-1. Jones capped off the inning with a left-field double that plated Pelsor and Herdegen to push the margin to 10-1.
 
Carthage notched their final run in the fourth inning when Sam Payton doubled home Marisa Maldonado, who reached on an error, to make the score 11-1.
 
Zinkiewicz, Uhwat, Juarez, Herdegen, Pelsor and Jones each had two hits for the Lady Reds. Herron, who went the distance on the pitching rubber, surrendered three hits and struck out six batters.
 
Lady Reds 10, Wheaton 0 (Five Innings)
 
The Lady Reds' shutout began with a two-run first inning, which began with Uhwat's lead-off double. Uhwat moved to third base off Juarez's groundout before she scored on an illegal pitch to make the score 1-0. Herdegen, who walked, eventually scored from third base off Hailey Rothstein's bases-loaded walk to widen Carthage's lead to 2-0.
 
Hailey Rothstein's three-run home run sparked a seven-run Carthage third inning to push the margin to 9-0. Juarez and Herdegen each contributed a one-run double in the frame.  

Alessia Knowski capped off Carthage's scoring with a fourth-inning RBI single that plated Payton, who walked, to make the score 10-0.
 
Goldsmith improved her win-loss record to 8-1 with the complete-game shutout.
 
Shannon Walsh went two-for-three at the plate for Carthage. Eight other Lady Reds tallied one hit in the game.
 
Carthage will return to action Thursday, April 13 when they host new CCIW member Carroll University (Wis.) (DH) at 3:00 p.m.
